  • Do I need a physician's referral to start therapy at MedStar Physical Therapy?

In many cases, you may begin outpatient physical therapy without a formal physician referral (this is called, “direct access”), but it depends on your insurance and condition. It’s best to check with your insurance to verify.

  • What happens during my first physical therapy visit?

For your first session, we’ll perform a comprehensive evaluation: review your medical and injury history, assess your strength, range of motion, balance/movement patterns, and discuss your functional goals. From there, we’ll develop a personalized treatment plan and explain what to expect in upcoming visits.

  • What specialized equipment or services are available at this location?

MedStar Health Physical Therapy at Hollywood offers advanced services in sports and orthopedics rehab, manual therapy, dry needling, foot orthotics, vestibular/balance rehab, TMJ treatment, and more. These offerings allow us to treat a wide spectrum of needs—from everyday orthopedic issues to sports-specific rehabilitation and performance improvement.

  • How many sessions will I need, and how long might each session last?

The number and duration of sessions depend on your specific injury or condition, treatment goals, and progress. Some patients may complete therapy in fewer visits; others—especially those recovering from surgery or returning to sport—may require more frequent or longer sessions. We reassess your progress often and adjust accordingly.

  • What types of patients do you treat (age groups and conditions)?

We treat patients ages 12 and up, from adolescents to adults and older adults, with a broad spectrum of orthopedic, sports and neurologic conditions. Whether you’re recovering from surgery, managing a chronic condition, or returning from a sports injury, we have the PT expertise to help.

  • How should I prepare for my physical therapy appointment?

Eat a balanced meal 1-2 hours prior to therapy. Drink about 2.5 cups of water prior to therapy. Take any prescribed pain medications at least 1 hour prior to therapy. Dress in T-shirts, athletic tops, sweatpants, shorts, yoga pants, or athletic leggings. Wear athletic/walking shoes and avoid open toed sandals, flip-flops, and high heels. Ensure proper access to the treatment area.
