Areas of focus

With a focus on real-world application, the Information Innovation Lab develops and maintains the systems that power automation, AI, and education across MedStar Health. Its core work centers on three primary areas:

Automation at scale

MedStar Health’s Automation Center of Excellence delivers robotic process automation (RPA) tools that reduce variation and support transformation across pharmacy, supply chain, human resources, and revenue cycle functions. These tools are designed with efficiency in mind: reducing manual effort, improving data accuracy, and enabling teams to redirect their time and attention to higher-value tasks.

In addition to the creation and maintenance of these systems, technical staff provide hands-on training and consultation, helping departments identify where automation can streamline future processes.

Artificial intelligence (AI) strategy and governance

As AI becomes more embedded in healthcare operations, the Information Innovation Lab plays an essential role in advancing AI governance and deployment at MedStar Health through the AI Center of Excellence. MedStar Health’s AI governance model now includes a systemwide review board, expert working groups, and a structured intake and verification process. Emerging solutions, such as voice AI tools, are being developed, integrated, and scaled to reduce provider burden and drive innovative workplace solutions through improved documentation quality and clinical accuracy. The Information Innovation Lab team also supports the AI Hub, a systemwide resource designed to increase associate fluency and engagement with AI tools and governance processes.

In collaboration with MedStar Health Digital Transformation, the MedStar Health Research Institute, and other system partners, the team works to ensure responsible and strategic use of AI across departments. This includes guiding vendor selection and integration, developing use-case specific tools, and establishing safety, compliance, and performance standards for clinical and operational applications.

Learning technologies infrastructure

The Information Innovation Lab maintains and enhances the learning management systems used across MedStar Health to deliver critical workforce training. Each year, the system serves millions of users across clinical and non-clinical teams.

These systems manage a wide range of functions, including online education modules, in-person course scheduling, and compliance documentation. By supporting both the technical infrastructure and evolving training needs, the lab ensures that teams across the system are prepared to drive the future of patient care.
