To qualify for the MedStar Washington Hospital Center residency program in oral and maxillofacial surgery, the applicant must:
- Have graduated from or be eligible for graduation from an accredited U.S. dental school or Canadian school
- Be either a U.S. citizen, Canadian citizen, or have proof of permanent residency within the U.S.
- Be self-motivated, disciplined, confident, and inquisitive with a willingness to learn and an inclination toward clinical and surgical practice with a strong academic background

Have passed part one of the National Board Dental Exam. If no numeric score is available from Part 1 of dental boards, the applicant must take the NBME Comprehensive Basic Science Exam (CBSE) administered through the American Association of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons
