MedStar Health Advanced Practice Provider Inpatient Transplant Post Graduate Training Program

Samantha A. Morse, PA-C, is a certified physician assistant with over a decade of experience specializing in hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) and transplant surgery.

Samantha earned her Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from Drexel University in 2013. She began her career at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in 2014 as an inpatient advanced practice provider (APP) on the HPB Surgery service. In 2016, she joined Massachusetts General Hospital as an inpatient APP with the Abdominal Transplant Surgery service, where she was actively involved in clinical care, research, and educational initiatives.

In October 2024, Samantha joined MedStar Georgetown University Hospital as the Clinical Lead Advanced Practice Provider (APP) for the MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute, overseeing APP operations across Adult and Pediatric Transplant Surgery, HPB Surgery, Hepatology, and Nephrology. She subsequently transitioned into the role of Chief Advanced Practice Provider, where she provides strategic and operational leadership for a team of more than 50 advanced practice providers across the institute. In this role, she leads workforce planning, clinical operations, professional development, quality improvement, and interdisciplinary collaboration to support excellence in patient care.

Samantha is committed to advancing high-quality, multidisciplinary care for patients with liver, pancreas, and biliary diseases, as well as those undergoing abdominal organ transplantation. She is passionate about APP leadership, program development, education, and fostering high-performing clinical teams that deliver exceptional patient outcomes.

Karenna Bowden, MSN, AGACNP, is an Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner with progressive experience in transplant surgery, hepatobiliary surgery, critical care, and clinical leadership. She currently serves as the Inpatient Adult Clinical Lead Advanced Practice Provider at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, where she provides operational leadership for the inpatient transplant APP team, oversees clinical workflows, mentors providers, and supports quality improvement initiatives while maintaining an active clinical practice.

Since joining MedStar Georgetown in 2022 as an Inpatient Abdominal Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery Nurse Practitioner, Karenna has specialized in the management of complex kidney, liver, pancreas, and intestinal transplant recipients as well as hepatobiliary surgery patients. Her responsibilities include leading multidisciplinary rounds, managing post-operative care, coordinating discharge planning, interpreting diagnostic studies, addressing complications, and serving as a preceptor for new nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and graduate nursing students.

Before becoming a nurse practitioner, Karenna built a strong critical care nursing foundation through both permanent and travel ICU positions across the United States. She gained experience in medical-surgical and medical intensive care units at hospitals in Florida, North Dakota, South Carolina, Georgia, Maryland, and Washington, DC. This diverse background strengthened her expertise in caring for critically ill patients in high-acuity environments and adapting quickly to different healthcare systems.
