About me
Timothy Kennedy, MD, MBA, is a board-certified surgeon who is fellowship trained in surgical oncology and minimally invasive surgery. He specializes in the treatment of complex cancers in the liver, pancreas, bile duct, and upper gastrointestinal tract. Dr. Kennedy also serves as the system chief of surgical oncology at MedStar Health, John S. Dillon chair of surgical oncology at Georgetown University’s Department of Surgery, and surgeon in chief at Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center. The latter is a nationally recognized program known for its clinical excellence and research innovations.
Dr. Kennedy provides personalized care to address the unique health goals of each patient. He begins by creating a welcoming environment where patients and their loved ones – caregivers, families, and friends – are encouraged to participate in open and honest conversations. At the same time, he collaborates with a highly skilled team to help ensure that patients achieve the best possible outcomes. These compassionate professionals include medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, gastroenterologists, radiologists, pathologists, advanced practice providers, nurse navigators, and many others. Referring physicians are also healthcare partners who are kept well informed about their patients’ medical journeys.
With clinical interests in gastrointestinal and soft tissue oncology, Dr. Kennedy is committed to the discovery of new treatments that can advance patients’ quality of life. From serving as a faculty educator to leading clinical trials as a principal investigator, he is driven to share his knowledge and contribute to the ongoing evolution of the field.
Additionally, he is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Society of Surgical Oncology, International Gastric Cancer Congress, Americas Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, and American Society of Clinical Oncology.
Philosophy of Care
“I am honored to serve as my patients’ advocate by ensuring that they receive the same quality care that I would provide a member of my own family. One way is by maintaining a nurturing environment that is committed to removing healthcare barriers. Another method is by prioritizing the delivery of advanced and personalized care that values the unique differences of each patient. The foundation of these and many other approaches is to help patients concentrate their energies on recovering and healing while our health professionals focus on optimizing the use of medical, surgical, and support services to improve overall wellness.”
