About me
Sonya Malekzadeh, MD, is a board-certified otolaryngologist with MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and Professor of otolaryngology at Georgetown University School of Medicine.
Dr. Malekzadeh sees patients for a variety of ear, nose, and throat conditions, particularly head and neck cancers, sinus problems requiring surgery, and sleep apnea.
Dr. Malekzadeh's research interests center on medical education and simulation training, including evaluating the role of low-cost task trainers in otolaryngology. At Georgetown, she has been honored twice with the Outstanding Teaching Award for her educational efforts within the Department of Otolaryngology. Dr. Malekzadeh was a graduate of the first class of MedStar Health's award-winning Teaching Scholars program, a partnership between MedStar Health Research Institute and MedStar Health's academic affairs division that enables clinicians to utilize research methodology so they can apply it to education.
Dr. Malekzadeh has developed numerous innovative education tools, including COCLIA (Comprehensive Otolaryngologic Curriculum, Learning through Interactive Approach), an on-line resident educational tool. This program is endorsed by the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation (AAO-HNS/F) and is utilized by many Otolaryngology programs. She developed the first ORL Emergencies Boot Camp and co-directs this annual course in Baltimore.
As an active member of the AAO-HNS/F, she has chaired and served as member of numerous committees, including the Board of Directors and Chair of the Women in Otolaryngology. Her term as Coordinator for Education, led to the development of educational products and programming for the Foundation’s membership. Dr. Malekzadeh has served as Associate Editor of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery since 2013. She is a member of numerous educational societies, including The Society of University Otolaryngologist and The Association for Surgical Education. She is Chair for the Otolaryngology Program Directors Organization.
Dr. Malekzadeh received her medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC, where she also completed her internship in general surgery. After fulfilling her residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at The University of Maryland in Baltimore, she joined the faculty in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Georgetown in 2001.
