About me
Shweta Kurian, MD, is the director of breast medical oncology and the High-Risk Cancer Program at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center and the MedStar Health Bel Air Medical Campus. Board certified in hematology and medical oncology, Dr. Kurian cares for patients with breast and gynecological cancers. Additionally, she has a specialized interest in the genetics of breast cancer and the steps that can be taken clinically to decrease the risk of developing breast cancer for both women and men who are deemed high-risk because they carry a genetic mutation or by virtue of family history.
Dr. Kurian is a graduate of the Government Medical College, Trivandrum, Kerala University, located in India. She completed an internal medicine residency at George Washington University/Providence Hospital in Washington D.C., where she was appointed chief resident. Her training concluded with a fellowship at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital and the University of Miami, with concentration on hematology and oncology care. A believer in the importance of lifelong education, Dr. Kurian is a member of the American Society of Hematology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. She also applies her clinical knowledge and expertise as a reviewer for several prestigious medical journals.
Dr. Kurian is fluent in both Hindi and Malayalam. She also has knowledge of the Punjabi and Gujarati languages. She accepts new patient appointments at both MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center at the MedStar Health Bel Air Medical Campus.
Dr. Kurian’s Philosophy of Care
“Cancer care is very complex. It involves different specialties and multiple modalities, and requires an understanding of esoteric research trials. Patient care involves selecting the best modality of treatment for each patient based on our knowledge of all of the options available. It’s also about understanding the patient as a fellow human being with their wishes being center stage as their care is directed. My role as a physician is to help my patients understand and navigate all their options and chose what is best for them.”
