About me
Dr. Sean Whelton is a board-certified rheumatologist and academic leader with a clinical and scholarly focus on inflammatory autoimmune diseases. He cares for patients with a wide range of rheumatic conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, gout, sarcoidosis, IgG4-related disease, and vasculitis.
Dr. Whelton earned his Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Duke University and his medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Rheumatology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.
A committed educator, Dr. Whelton served as Director of the Internal Medicine Clerkship from 2004 to 2016. Since 2016, he has led the Internal Medicine Residency Program as Program Director and currently serves as Vice Chair for Medical Education in the Department of Medicine. As the Allen J. Goody Professor of Medicine, he upholds the Jesuit value of cura personalis, care for the whole person, in his work with patients, trainees, and colleagues.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Whelton enjoys spending time with his wife and their four children.
