About me

Samir Mardini, MD, is Chair of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at MedStar Georgetown Medical Center, Academic Chair of Plastic Surgery at Georgetown University, Physician Executive for the MedStar Medical Group, and System Chief of Plastic Surgery for MedStar Health. Dr. Mardini specializes in facial aesthetic, reconstructive, and craniofacial surgery.

An international leader in craniofacial surgery, Dr. Mardini treats cleft and craniofacial conditions, facial nerve and facial paralysis, facial injury and disfigurement, and vascular malformations. Working with a multidisciplinary team, he performs advanced procedures, including facial nerve surgery, facial reconstruction, facial aesthetic surgery, craniofacial bone remodeling, and facial transplantation.

His research focuses on advancing facial reconstruction through 3D modeling, facial anatomy, nerve regeneration, and facial transplantation. He has published five textbooks on reconstructive surgery, a children’s book to help children cope with facial differences and has delivered keynote lectures to national and international societies and major universities worldwide.

Dr. Mardini spent 20 years at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, establishing and leading several programs, including the Integrated Plastic Surgery Residency and Mayo Clinic’s Face Transplant Program. He also chaired the Division of Plastic Surgery, directed the Cleft and Craniofacial Clinic, and founded and directed the Facial Paralysis and Reanimation Clinic. He led the team that performed Mayo Clinic’s first two successful face transplants.
