About me
Dr. Ryan Murray is the William & Patricia Oppenheim Vice Chair of Academic Affairs and Chief of Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at the MedStar Orthopaedic Institute. He is also an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Georgetown University School of Medicine and a Team Physician for Georgetown University Athletics. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and holds a Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine. He practices at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital as well as several ambulatory sites throughout the Washington region.
His practice is focused on sports related injuries in patients of all ages with a special interest in ACL reconstruction, patellar instability, cartilage and meniscal pathology along with rotator cuff tears and shoulder instability. He has unique training and a niche sub-specialty in pediatric sports medicine and utilizes specialized techniques to treat sports related injuries, including ACL tears, with physeal (growth plate) sparing techniques.
Dr. Murray completed his undergraduate studies at Boston College and obtained his medical degree from the Georgetown University School of Medicine. He then completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, followed by two fellowships, the first in sports medicine at the University of Pittsburgh followed by a second in pediatric orthopaedic surgery at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC. Following his training, he returned to the faculty at Georgetown and has served in numerous administrative roles including research, operations, and academic affairs. In addition, he has been awarded the Kenmore Teaching award by the orthopaedic surgery chief residents.
Dr. Murray is active in both regional and national orthopaedic organizations and is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). He has presented research at the AAOS national meeting, along with others, and has taught the pediatric section of the AAOS board review course. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Murray is interested in research involving adult and pediatric sports medicine and has published his work in several well-known orthopaedic journals.
Outside of work, Dr. Murray enjoys spending time with his wife, who is a pediatrician, and their two daughters. He also enjoys traveling and sports.
