About me
Mihir M. Shah, MD, MS, FACS, FSSO is the chief of surgical oncology at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and Associate Medical Director of Surgical Oncology Research. He is a double board-certified surgical oncologist with expertise in complex robotic surgery for hepatopancreatobiliary and gastrointestinal malignancies (including gastroesophageal).
Dr. Shah is committed to advancing minimally invasive surgical techniques and expanding access to innovative treatment options, including clinical trials for patients. His work integrates precision surgery with multidisciplinary cancer care to optimize outcomes and recovery.
His research focuses on clinical outcomes and translational science in pancreatic cancer, in particular, analyzing the tumor microenvironment. He currently leads a prospective study examining how diet and gut microbiome impact the response to chemotherapy in pancreatic cancer. His research has been recognized nationally with awards, including the NIH K12 Career Development Award and the SAGES Research Grant.
Prior to joining MedStar, Dr. Shah was an Associate Professor of Surgery at Emory University Winship Cancer Institute and played a key role in developing the institution’s robotic surgical oncology program.
