About me
Michael Hoa, MD, is a Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology at Georgetown University School of Medicine. Dr. Hoa is board certified in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, otology, and neurotology. Dr. Hoa serves as the medical director of the MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Cochlear Implant Program which provides comprehensive cochlear implant services to both pediatric and adult populations.
In addition to his duties as a neurotologist (ear and skull base surgeon), Dr. Hoa is a surgeon-scientist in the intramural research program at the National Institute for Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). His interest is in hearing restoration and preservation in the setting of hearing instability disorders and cochlear implantation. Prior to his arrival at Georgetown, Dr. Hoa completed an otolaryngology residency at Wayne State University School of Medicine and a neurotology fellowship at the prestigious House Clinic in Los Angeles. Dr. Hoa also received extensive research training at the associated House Research Institute under an NIH-sponsored institutional research training grant investigating the underlying mechanisms involved in hair cell regeneration.
In addition to the above, Dr. Hoa along with the skull base surgery team at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital offer all approaches for the treatment of acoustic neuroma (vestibular schwannoma) including hearing preservation (middle fossa approach, retrosigmoid approach) and non-hearing preservation approaches (translabyrinthine approach) as well as stereotactic radiosurgery treatments. His training and experience allow him to tailor the treatments to each patient’s needs.
Dr. Hoa and his team are one of the few surgeons in the region who offer the full range of hearing rehabilitation options to both adult and pediatric patients including, hearing aids, implantable hearing aids (i.e. Maxum, Esteem) for adults, active bone conducting hearing devices and cochlear implants. In addition, he also has advanced training in endoscopic ear surgery approaches allowing for minimally invasive options for ear surgery across the age spectrum.
Dr. Hoa's clinical interests include diagnosis and management of acoustic neuroma and skull base tumors (including hearing preservation surgical approaches); diagnosis and treatment of hearing loss (including otosclerosis and genetic hearing loss); hearing restoration (including cochlear implantation, implantable hearing devices); diagnosis and treatment of Meniere's disease; pediatric otology/neurotology and treatment of chronic ear infections including cholesteatoma.
