About me
Matthew Edwardson, MD, is a vascular neurologist and a member of the stroke team at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. He is also an associate professor in the Georgetown University Medical Center Department of Neurology and part of the Center for Brain Plasticity and Recovery where his research focuses on neuroimaging and blood biomarkers of stroke recovery. Dr. Edwardson is actively recruiting patients into stroke-related research studies.
Previously, Dr. Edwardson was a Stroke Fellow at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.
Dr. Edwardson's Philosophy of Care
When someone suffers a stroke it can be devastating both physically and emotionally. We strive to very rapidly assess patients and when indicated provide emergent therapies that might salvage brain tissue at risk for further injury. I enjoy counseling stroke patients and their families through this difficult time. Stroke can be frightening, but by helping patients understand what to expect, I feel I'm able to provide some peace in the midst of this storm.
Unfortunately, few therapies exist for stroke and many patients are left disabled despite our best efforts. The absence of therapies has motivated me to pursue stroke recovery-related research. My research is focused on detecting molecular markers of brain repair in the peripheral blood. MedStar Georgetown is a natural fit to conduct this research given the many teams here studying blood biomarkers in cancer and neurodegenerative disease. Data from these studies will help us develop drugs that can improve natural repair mechanisms in the brain and reduce stroke disability.
