About me
Liudmila Schafer, MD, FACP, is a fellowship-trained and board-certified medical oncologist and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians, specializing in sarcomas and complex and rare tumors. Dr. Schafer brings experience across clinical care, academic medicine, oncology drug development, and clinical research, providing personalized, evidence-based care with expertise in precision medicine, immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and novel targeted therapies. She has served as principal investigator and co-investigator on clinical trials through national cooperative groups.
Dr. Schafer cares for patients with soft tissue and bone sarcomas, including undifferentiated pleomorphic sarcoma, leiomyosarcoma, synovial sarcoma, desmoid fibromatosis, angiosarcoma, osteosarcoma, and ultra-rare tumors. Her area of expertise includes precision oncology and the clinical application of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) to detect molecular residual disease.
She formerly served as Director of Gastrointestinal Oncology at Saint Luke's Health System in Kansas City and as Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Missouri–Kansas City and the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. She completed the American Course on Drug Development and Regulatory Sciences (ACDRS), a Graduate Program in Clinical and Translational Science, and an advanced executive program at Emory University's Goizueta Business School.
Dr. Schafer is a Teacher Scholar and dedicated mentor who helped many medical trainees and early-career physicians with professional development.
Across patient care, research, and education, she brings a thoughtful, collaborative, and precise approach to delivering advanced therapies with compassion and improving outcomes for patients with complex cancers.
