About me
Gabrielle Rubin, DO, is an advanced heart failure and transplant cardiologist at Washington Hospital Center and the Associate Program Director for the advanced heart failure fellowship. She is board-certified in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology, cardiovascular disease, nuclear cardiology, adult echocardiography, and internal medicine.
Dr. Rubin specializes in diagnosing, treating, and coordinating the care of patients with chronic, complex cardiovascular conditions such as heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, cardiogenic shock, left ventricular assist devices (LVADs), heart transplants, and other cardiomyopathies.
Believing that every patient deserves to have a full understanding of their condition and treatment options, her approach centers on transparency, patient education, and trust. To that end, she implores patients to maintain agency and control over their care with proactive participation. Dr. Rubin is also a strong advocate for women’s cardiovascular health, with a special interest in peripartum cardiomyopathy.
Her research interests focus on improving outcomes in advanced heart failure, particularly by optimizing medical therapy, selecting patients for advanced therapies, and developing care delivery models that reduce hospitalizations and improve quality of life. She is also interested in mechanical circulatory support and served as first author on a paper exploring the use of total artificial hearts as a bridge to heart transplantation.
Dr. Rubin earned her medical degree at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her residency in internal medicine and fellowship in cardiovascular disease at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. While there, she received awards for her exceptional leadership and patient care, namely the Chairman's Resident Leadership Award and the Excellence Award in the Medical Intensive Care Unit. Next, she completed an additional fellowship in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Before returning to MedStar, she was an Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Attending Physician at the University of Arizona, Banner Medical Center, where she gained clinical expertise in the management of total artificial hearts.
To bring her best self to her work as a physician, Dr. Rubin prioritizes her own balance and well-being by staying physically active, spending meaningful time with loved ones, and pursuing personal interests.
