About me
Emily Shih, MD, is a cardiac surgeon at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. Dr. Shih sees patients with coronary heart disease, valvular pathologies, structural heart conditions, and aortic pathologies.
Known for her thoughtful and collaborative approach, Dr. Shih believes excellent outcomes come from strong partnerships between patients and a multidisciplinary team of specialists. She takes time to clearly explain diagnoses, treatment options, and expected outcomes, empowering patients to make informed decisions with confidence.
Dr. Shih provides both traditional open-heart surgery and minimally invasive techniques. Her clinical interests include valvular and aortic pathologies, with a particular focus on new methods for long-term management of valvular disease. She is committed to practicing evidence-based medicine and stays current with the latest research and professional guidelines to ensure patients feel confident in their care.
Dr. Shih earned her medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School before completing a combined general and cardiothoracic surgery residency at Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital and Baylor University Medical Center, where she served as Chief Fellow. She also completed a post-doctoral fellowship in clinical cardiovascular science at Baylor University Medical Center and Baylor Scott & White Research Institute. During her studies, she completed a medical mission trip to Lima, Peru, where she volunteered as a resident surgeon at Dos de Mayo Hospital, performing cardiac surgery.
In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Shih is an active researcher whose work has earned her recognition as a Doximity Most Cited and Published Clinician, ranking in the top 10% of physicians.
