About me
Atsuko Okabe, MD, is a board-certified surgeon who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of breast conditions – both cancerous and benign. She sees patients at the Breast Center at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center and at MedStar Health Bel Air Medical Campus.
Dr. Okabe is trained to offer her patients the latest, most state-of-the-art treatment options, including breast conserving surgery, nipple-sparing mastectomy, and accelerated partial breast radiation. She advocates strongly for the use of clinical trials and encourages eligible patients to consider participating in research-based care, as a pathway to achieving the best possible clinical outcomes. Dr. Okabe is an active participant in multidisciplinary tumor board conferences, where patient cases are assessed by a team of MedStar Health oncologists, and the most optimal plan of care is determined for each. Additionally, as she is meeting with patients and families, she emphasizes the importance of self-breast exam, often debunking the myth that “only those with a family history of breast cancer need to be concerned about breast cancer.”
Dr. Okabe is certified by the American Society of Breast Surgeons to perform breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsies. She is a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Breast Surgeons, and is actively involved in community outreach to promote breast cancer prevention and early detection. Dr. Okabe has been recognized as a Top Doctor by Baltimore magazine.
Dr. Okabe’s Philosophy of Care
