About me
Alice P. Barr, MD, is a gynecologic oncologist at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, specializing in the treatment of patients with gynecologic malignancies and/or a family history of malignancies, such as endometrial, cervical, vulvar, or ovarian cancer. She also sees patients for uterine fibroids, ovarian masses, and endometrial hyperplasia.
Dr. Barr provides personalized care that prioritizes quality of life, taking into consideration her patients’ goals and individual circumstances. She performs the full spectrum of surgical approaches, including open, robotic, and minimally invasive procedures, such as minimally invasive debulking surgery and sentinel lymph node biopsy. When appropriate, she offers neoadjuvant chemotherapy to increase the likelihood of being able to perform minimally invasive surgeries.
Her approach focuses on developing long-term relationships with her patients and creating a space where they and their families feel comfortable asking questions and sharing their concerns. She takes pride in providing a warm bedside manner, listening closely, and supporting patients throughout every step of their cancer journey. She is particularly passionate about integrating supportive oncology and palliative care early and often so that her patients have access to as many resources as they need.
Dr. Barr received her medical degree from The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences and completed her residency at the Carolinas Medical Center. During her residency, she completed a rotation at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in the Texas Medical Center, where she trained alongside internationally renowned doctors and researchers. From there, she went on to complete her fellowship training at the University of California, Davis. She is a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Society of Gynecologic Oncology.
Dr. Barr was born at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and grew up in the DMV. She is happy to be back home, providing exceptional care for the people in her community.
Philosophy of Care
“I want patients to know that I genuinely care about their well-being, not just their diagnosis. I am compassionate, communicative, and committed to using the most up-to-date, evidence-based treatments in gynecologic oncology. I believe in walking alongside patients and their families throughout the cancer journey, helping them understand their options, and aligning treatment plans with their individual goals and needs. It is a privilege to care for patients during some of the most significant moments of their lives.”
