About me
Ahmed N. Khan, MD, MS, is an attending advanced heart failure and transplant cardiologist at the MedStar Heart and Vascular Institute.
As a heart failure specialist who is board-certified in cardiology, echocardiography, and nuclear cardiology, Dr. Khan sees patients for the treatment of heart failure at both its early and later stages. For patients in the early stages of heart failure, he works to ensure that patients receive appropriate medical therapy and close follow-up in order to successfully manage and treat their condition. For patients who are in the later stages of heart failure and who may need advanced therapies, such as heart transplantation and LVAD, he works closely with the transplant team at the MedStar Heart and Vascular Institute to provide exceptional and collaborative care.
In addition to heart failure, Dr. Khan also treats a wide range of cardiovascular conditions, including coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, pulmonary hypertension, and atrial fibrillation.
Dr. Khan’s clinical interests include caring closely for patients with all stages of heart failure. Dr. Khan is encouraged by advancements in the treatment of heart failure and related conditions that allow patients to live longer and with fewer symptoms. His research interests include medical bioethics as it pertains to heart failure and heart transplantation.
Dr. Khan received his medical degree from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where he stayed to complete an internal medicine residency and served as Chief Resident. During his time at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, Dr. Khan was a clinical instructor of medicine and Assistant Professor of a course he designed, entitled ‘Medicine, Ethics, and the Humanities.’ He then completed a three-year cardiology disease fellowship at the University of Maryland Medical Center, where he served as Chief Fellow and during which he was awarded the Faculty-Chosen Fellow Teacher of the Year Award and the Nathan Carliner Award for Distinction in Cardiovascular Research. He then did a specialty fellowship in advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Dr. Khan also received a Master of Science in Bioethics from Columbia University.
Following his passion for education and mentorship, throughout his time in residency and fellowship training, Dr. Khan held many teaching positions including instructor, lecturer, and preceptor. He is a member of the American College of Cardiology, the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, and the Heart Failure Society of America.
Dr. Khan enjoys spending time with his wife and daughter, reading, and exploring the DC area.
Philosophy of care
“A diagnosis of heart failure can be a lifelong diagnosis that can be difficult and scary for patients and their families. My goal as a heart failure physician is to treat my patients as though they were my family and provide them with the best care possible.
“I try to meet my patients where they are, give my best expert medical advice and opinion, and work with the patient and their families to realize their goals in their care. I enjoy helping my patients get back to the things that make life worthwhile for them.
“Each of my patients is a unique person who I am excited to have the opportunity to work with. I’ve found the more collaborative that you are with your patients, the better the doctor-patient relationship is and the more likely you are to reach your treatment goals. I feel honored when my patients say that they felt heard and well cared for by me.
“I view referrals as an important responsibility, and I see it as a privilege to be trusted with a patient’s care. I look forward to collaborating with referring physicians, maintaining close communication, and working together to do the best for the patient.”
