About me

Ari Cedars, MD, is the Regional Director of the Adult Congenital Heart Disease (ACHD) Program at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Dr. Cedars is a board-certified cardiologist in both cardiovascular disease and ACHD, one of only a few hundred physicians in the United States with this specialized certification.

Dr. Cedars is dedicated to providing comprehensive lifelong care for adults with congenital heart disease and to facilitating clinical trials to investigate novel therapeutics. He has expertise in advanced heart failure affecting adults with congenital heart disease and works closely with multidisciplinary teams to manage care throughout patients' lives.

Dr. Cedars’ research aims to improve outcomes and quality of life through individualized care and patient-centered approaches. He developed a patient-reported outcome metric (PROM) specifically for ACHD to be used in clinical care and research, enabling physicians to reproducibly measure patients’ health-related experiences and thereby provide the best care. His current work explores the use of devices and drugs in ACHD patients—particularly those with Fontan physiology— in a targeted or individualized manner to delay or prevent clinical deterioration.

Before joining MedStar, Dr. Cedar served as the Director of the ACHD Center and Associate Professor of Cardiology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Dr. Cedars obtained his medical degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston before completing his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Michigan, followed by fellowships in adult cardiology, lab experience in bioorganic chemistry, and molecular pharmacology research, and ACHD at Washington University School of Medicine.

Dr. Cedars holds key roles across prominent organizations, including the Adult Congenital Heart Association, the ACTION Learning Network, and the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is also an active member of the American Heart Association and the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation. He is a past President of the Alliance for Adult Research in Congenital Cardiology.

Outside of medicine, Dr. Cedars enjoys exercising, reading, and spending time with his family.
