Leonardtown, MD – MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital has received re-accreditation under the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP), a joint quality program of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). The Bariatric Surgery Program at MedStar St. Mary’s has maintained accreditation by MBSAQIP since  2023.

MBSAQUIP - Metabolic and Bariatric Accreditation logoMBSAQIP is a comprehensive, nationwide surgical quality program designed to ensure the safe and effective performance of metabolic and bariatric surgery. Surgical outcomes focus on weight loss and the treatment of obesity-related diseases, such as diabetes, sleep apnea, and others. Research shows accredited centers experience lower complications and better outcomes than those of non-accredited facilities.

“We are extremely proud to be recognized for our continued dedication to excellence through our bariatric surgery program,” said Mimi Novello, MD, FACHE, president of MedStar St. Mary's Hospital and senior vice president of MedStar Health. “Our team is committed to meeting the rigorous standards of this accreditation to ensure our patients have the best possible outcomes that will help them attain their goal of achieving a healthier future.”

As an MBSAQIP-accredited hospital, MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital has also become an ACS Surgical Quality Partner. Being a Surgical Quality Partner signifies a hospital’s dedication to consistently improving procedures and approaches while maintaining a critical eye on process at every step. The Surgical Quality Partner designation lets patients know MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital is dedicated to quality and relentless self-improvement and has been verified or accredited by the ACS. Patients can trust that the care they receive at Surgical Quality Partner hospitals adheres to the most rigorous standards in surgical quality.

"ACS Quality programs are grounded in more than a century of experience, and participation is an important measure of a hospital’s surgical quality,” said Patricia L. Turner, MD, MBA, FACS,  ACS executive director & chief executive officer. “As an ACS Surgical Quality Partner, MedStar St. Mary’s has shown a commitment to providing the best possible patient care, evaluating that care in a rigorous fashion, and dedicating itself to continuous self-improvement.”
